Q Sociologists have analyzed how language can create realities. When the term "securing the border" is used we image security systems such as video monitors, alarms, and beware signs (similar to what people might have to secure their homes). When the term "policing the border" is used it creates a reality in which immigrants need to be "policed," and therefore are viewed as criminals. Policing the border involves police cars with lights and sirens, policemen with handguns, handcuffs, and batons. With your classmates discuss what does "militarizing the border" involve? How are immigrants crossing the border viewed? What equipment will be used?

Using the military to monitor the border with Mexico is an example of "militarizing" the border. Tools like these are frequently employed in efforts to discourage illegal border crossings by intimidating and coercing would-be immigrants. Critics say it's unnecessary spending that won't make Americans any safer. In an effort to tighten security, the military has sent troops and equipment to the border. Helicopters and other aircraft are frequently used to keep an eye on the border. The frontier will be protected by tanks and other military hardware. These measures are commonly used to intimidate and scare away potential border crossers.
